Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find The Lawrentian?

How do I subscribe and get it sent to my home?

Does The Lawrentian accept unsolicited story ideas/letters to the editor/tips for stories?
The Lawrentian accepts story ideas and tips -- either approach an editor in person or contact lawrentian@lawrence.edu. Letters to the Editor can be submitted here.

How do I become a Staff Writer?
When The Lawrentian is looking for writers there will be an ad run in the weekly print edition. Writers are generally divided between the sections (News, Features, Opinions & Editorials, Arts & Entertainment, and Sports) though it is possible -- and welcome -- for writers to write for more than one section. If you are interested in writing for the paper, please contact lawrentian@lawrence.edu and your request will be forwarded to the Section Editors for whom you are interested in writing. Prior journalism experience, with The Lawrentian or otherwise, is not necessary, though the editors will ask for writing samples. Potential staff writers are assigned 1-2 trial stories for the paper, upon which they are either made Staff Writer or redirected toward a writers’ workshop.

How do I become a Staff Photographer?
When The Lawrentian is looking for photographers there will be an ad run in the weekly print edition. If you are interested in taking photographs for the paper, please contact lawrentian@lawrence.edu and your request will be forwarded to the Photography Editors. Prior photography experience is necessary.

Why are articles due on Tuesday at 5pm?
Layout for The Lawrentian is completed on Wednesdays, and submitted to the printer on Thursday mornings. We ask for articles on Tuesday at 5 pm so as to give the Section Editors sufficient time to edit them and pass them onto our Copy Staff for further editing before the layout process can begin. Fitting together 12 pages of articles, photos, and other material is a lengthy process, one that can only go smoothly if everything is turned in on time.

Can you get paid to work for The Lawrentian?
Yes. All positions on the Editorial Board and Staff are paid positions -- this includes staff writers and photographers, as well as circulation staff.
