As cliché as it sounds, Caitlin Gallogly is a small woman with a big personality and, not surprisingly, not-so-tiny aspirations. After graduating from Lawrence next month, Gallogly will be moving northwest with Emily Meranda and going to school at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. A history and English double major during her time at Lawrence, she will getting her PhD in Early American History. She not only received the best financial aid program from the U of M but she felt a real affinity for the program in which, hopefully, she will "never see any of the medievalists ever again."
Gallogly has known since before she came to Lawrence that she wanted to teach at the college level. After having a spectacular and infectiously passionate U.S. History teacher in high school, she's fallen "into the right classes at the right time."
At Lawrence, Gallogly has been studying Early American History with Monica Rico, who acted as Gallogly's advisor for her recent honors project on propaganda plays in the American Revolution. She's also Professor Podair's research assistant and, at times, has found herself "seduced by the 12th century."
Despite Gallogly's clear interest, I couldn't help but cringe when she told me the program would take five to seven years to complete. Braver than I, Gallogly has saddled up for the experience, though she is slightly terrified. "I've always liked adventures," she said.
After receiving her PhD, Gallogly is hoping to return to the West Coast, ideally to settle in Santa Barbara. Gallogly's other plans for the future include getting married, having children, extensive traveling and owning a fleet of cats, specifically of the British shorthair breed. "They all look like Winston Churchill! Who wouldn't want to own one?" In looking at Gallogly's face as she said this, I had no doubt that, if nothing else, this goal would be accomplished.
