I graduated from Lawrence in 1981. While I will not say that acts of vandalism never occurred in my day, it seems that it has become a more serious problem.
If it is Lawrence students who are doing this, what has happened to erode the sense of community and of ownership? And if it is "townies" coming in, what has happened to degrade town/gown relations so badly?
In short, while the acts of vandalism are serious and troubling in themselves, they are even more troubling as symptoms of some deeper problem in the community.
