The women's tennis team seems to be on course to repeat, if not exceed, the success they enjoyed in their last season.
The team, being coached for the first time by Ross Anderson, has amassed a 7-2 record so far with their only losses coming against D-II Michigan Tech and UW-La Crosse. The Vikings have proved to be very capable under pressure, winning four dual meets by just a single match.
Sophomore Hanah McCarthy played in the decisive match in Lawrence's recent encounter with UW-Oshkosh where she rallied from a second-set loss to claim the third-set tiebreak and the 5-4 win for the Vikings.
McCarthy was awarded Midwest Conference Player of the Week honors for her performances at the No. 2 spot. Susan Klumpner, who returns to the No.1 spot after playing at No. 2 last season, has put together an impressive 7-2 record, the best on the team.
Klumpner, a junior from Downers Grove, IL, was also named Player of the Week by the MWC a week ago. Five of the Vikings' six starters currently hold winning records. Lawrence is at the top of the MWC North standings and will look to claim a spot at the team championships held in Madison at the end of the season.
The Vikings return to action this weekend when they face Hamline and UW-Stout.
