In a meet dominated by
the home team, the Lawrence
University Swim Team battled to
second- and third-place finishes
by the men’s and women’s teams,
respectively, at the Wisconsin
Private College Championships at
Carthage College last Saturday.
The men’s 200-yard medley
team won its relay by nearly five
seconds, finishing with a time of
1:42.94. Mac Watson anchored the
team and rounded out the firstplace
finish with a leg of only
23.18 seconds. The other members
of the team were Peter Brengel,
Tom Smith and Nate Kontny.
Watson also finished fourth in
the 500-yard freestyle with a time
of 5:08.05.
Brengel narrowly missed winning
the 100-yard backstroke, finishing
with a time of 56.71, just
three-tenths of a second behind
Patrick Duvall of Beloit College.
Carthage ran away with the
meet, finishing with 308 points to
second-place Lawrence’s 95.
For the women, Julia Heller
won the 200-yard freestyle by twotenths
of a second, finishing with
a time of 2:03.70. Heller also finished
second in the 100-yard freestyle
with a time of 56.61.
Rebecca Hamlyn placed second
in both the 200-yard individual
medley and the 100-yard butterfly.
Kelsey Gray won the 200-yard
butterfly with a time of 2:29.07 and
finished second in the 1,650-yard
freestyle with a time of 19:35.78.
The 800-yard freestyle team
composed of Kelsey Gray, Sarah
Bostrom, Jenna Budde and Rebecca
Hamlyn ran away with the competition
with a time of 8:47.73, nearly
eighteen full seconds ahead of the
second place team from Carroll
University.
The Vikings next hit the
pool at the Midwest Conference
Championships, held February
12-14 at the Buchanan-Kiewit
Recreation Center.
