Bird of the week: American goldfinch

An American goldfinch clings to a pine branch.

About: Adults in breeding plumage are bright yellow with black wings and white wing bars. Adult breeding males also have a black cap which makes them even more distinctive. In non-breeding plumage, adults appear a dull olive brown to olive yellow.

Where to find this bird: They frequent feeders and feed on seeds in the open, weedy areas. The SLUG garden frequently hosts them.

When to find this bird: Year-round

Fun fact: American goldfinches eat strictly seeds; they are one of the most strictly vegetarian birds, which only occasionally eats insects.
