In a time of national grief following the terrorist attacks on
September 11th, music has been a way for many people to heal and to
offer support to other people.
On October 7th, the day America officially began it’s military campaign in Afghanistan, the Conservatory of Music put on A Concert of Healing and Rememberance. The free concert raised 1,000 dollars through
voluntary donations for the American Red Cross’ relief effort.
Red white and blue ribbons were sold by Lawrence United at the Wynton Marsalis- Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra concert on Teusday October 9th. Lawrence United is an organization made up of members of several
fraternities, sororities and other groups.
Marsalis’ convocation lecture addressed how America needs to create a new nation identity through the arts and music. Specifically, the blues is a form of music that is “optimistic in the face of tragedy.”
Regardless of the form, musicians from lawrence and all over the world have a new perspective of what they are communicating when they make music.
