Lawrence University senior Kelly Mulcahy recently published a book of the photographs she made last year as part of her spring term independent study in studio art. Her book, Natural Absurdity, is a portrayal of the “absurdity” of women through her Irish heritage and her family. The book is dedicated to her twin sister, Bridget, but she is not the only one to appear in the photographs. Her mother, Reeny, and older sisters, Colleen and Erin, also appear in the book. Each family member has a different setting and wardrobe; a wardrobe that has been passed down through generations of her family.
While the photographs are captivating, the writing that goes along with them is what really makes the pictures stand out. Each sentence that coincides with a photograph addresses a different aspect of the “absurdity” of women.
Mulcahy had the book published through Lulu.com, an online organization, along with the help of her advisers to get the necessary details in place. Mulcahy, however, took most of the responsibility of publishing the book upon herself. It is a great accomplishment to be published at such a young age and her first work is definitely something to be proud of.
