The Secrets of the Sun

The sun has a magical quality to it. It is a beaming ball of fire. When it comes out, life has color again. Snow sparkles, skies become radiantly bright, and we become possibly our most positive selves. We have more energy, and we want to stay out until every last drop of sunlight is absorbed. Looking around, passersby have a bounce in their step. Conversations between friends are filled with laughter. The sun is like a big shot of espresso—it gives us instant vitality and zest for the day ahead. In the Hindu religion, the sun is given the qualities of a god. It is represented by the god known as Surya Devta, one among the many gods worshiped. This is how significant the sun is to some human beings, myself included. The world can look very different when the sun disappears. The blanket of grey that we see outside can be reflected inside our minds too. Anticipating rain or simply avoiding the cold forces us to remain indoors, sometimes with no one to provide us company, so we’re left alone with just our possessions and thoughts. This could mean that we start going down a deceptive cycle.

This starts with ruminating about every single event, conversation and interaction that has occurred in our lives. Rumination leads to procrastination. Then procrastination means a lack of motivation, which means feeling guilty all day, and the list goes on. What happens if we embrace the bad weather instead? Hot cocoa provides a comforting cheeriness to the day, and it becomes an opportunity to cozy up with a fluffy blanket and a captivating novel. Having a dog on your lap is a nice bonus, too. We can escape into a bubble of imagination, and the clouds suddenly become a canvas for our daydreams. The sun likes to play games with us. It likes to play hide and seek, except we, unfortunately, cannot seek it out. It comes out when it’s ready. The sun is like a young child—bright, full of energy and unpredictable. One could even say the sun is a bit fickle. Some days, it’s able to push away the clouds and say hello. On other days, the sun often chooses to sleep and rest. However, no matter the weather or day, we can make the best of it and play along with the sun’s games.
