Where the Water Meets the Earth

She was a woman of water, formed in a Pacific tsunami
and he was man, born from barren soil, grown through iron will.
By nature’s hand they both crashed upon the unforgiving stone shore
creatures of chaos and creation in an abandoned land
unstable isotopes prepared for collision.
But from catastrophe they birthed a peculiar peace,
the firm ground engulfing her mercurial fluidity
the cool sea nourishing his hardy, weathered roots,
two tempests tempered by each other’s fire.
From untamed land they raised a nation
planting dreams to outlive them both
side by side in their little garden
raising life from water and earth
