Basketball and hockey face off in volleyball intramurals

Intramural sports are a great way for students to get out of their dorms and compete in a variety of sports with classmates and friends. For student-athletes, intramurals allow them to play other sports and build teamwork and camaraderie with their teammates out of season. The women’s hockey and basketball teams took the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zones by competing in an intramural volleyball game on Monday, April 22.

The first set of the match was back-and-forth the entire time. The women’s basketball team eventually secured the lead with a couple of stellar serves from first-year Kylie Loomis and some phenomenal spikes from sophomore Taylor Svoboda and junior Mallory Meyer. Women’s volleyball team member junior Taylor Hughes, who played on the women’s hockey side, then got a rally going to put her team only 3 points behind. However, the basketball team bounced back to win the first set with a score of 25-21.

The second set was just as nail-biting. Basketball players pulled ahead and locked in a 7-1 lead, but the hockey team came back with a couple of killer serves by junior Taylor Halverson. Hockey stayed ahead for most of the game with some more great serves by Hughes. Although women’s basketball put up a tough fight, junior Beth McArthur on women’s hockey got a kill to win the set 25-21.

Basketball started off strong again in the final set. Hockey attempted to rally, but basketball came back fighting and won 15-12 to claim the victory.

Seniors Laney Martens and Sydney Seeley of the women’s hockey team expressed their joy for intramurals.

“Playing volleyball with my teammates is great team bonding and builds teamwork. We stay positive, slay and have fun,” Martens said.

“Playing volleyball helps our team bond and work together when we aren’t playing hockey. We get to work on playing together, and it’s fun to help each other out,” Seeley said, echoing the sentiments of Martens.

Intramurals are a fun and engaging way for students to enjoy college outside of the classroom. Classes and schoolwork can often consume students with the “Lawrence busy,” so it is crucial to exercise and have fun to alleviate these problems.
