Who hurt you?

The car jerks
Surprised, the horn honks
“I’ve been hit”
The thought runs through
Your mind, reeling

You honk, and wave hands
To alert the car ahead
Who had pulled back
After the old man in front
Failed a simple u-turn

Two girls
Faces full of derision
Annoyed and smug
(confused and defensive)
Peel away from the intersection

Only the guilty run
And you give chase

Their speed revs
And they begin to escape
(they continue with their drive)
And so
the hunt begins

You follow
In hot pursuit
You speed up, and swerve
They speed up, and avoid you
They are getting away
(they are terrified)
You take over the driver’s seat

Waving, shouting
“Pull over”
They ignore you
And your cries and your horn
Then they slow

You have them
They turn
Trapping themselves
In a 20-mile limit
They keep rolling forward

They finally stop
You have them boxed in
The police station is deserted
No one is coming to their aid
(what were they supposed to do?)

You exit the car
As does your blonde
And you are met with a sight
A rather pathetic one
Just two girls

One taller than the other
She keeps herself in front
(she protects the other)
As you and the blonde
Begin to rail

“You hit us”
“You hit us”
“You hit us”

The tall one keeps her head high
As the smaller one placates

She gestures to her bumper
And you begin to calm
There is no damage
You were wrong
(they are wary)

You still swap information
And get in your car
Drive away with your blonde
Don’t know anything
Of the damage you’ve caused

You chased these two girls
Down a highway at speed
Without even checking if they’d hit you at all
