There's a part of me that wishes
that I could protect you from the
world as I crawl into bed beside you,
placing my body between you and
the door, but I don't know if it's enough;
if my bones will shield you, if my arms
wrapped around you are going to save
you despite how much I love you,
because there are things in this life
no one can protect against, but
I will lay here all the same, offering
you my warmth against your skin,
my hand over your heart.
