Committee on Student Services Advancement re-kickstarts accessible menstrual product initiative

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Committee on Student Services Advancement (CSSA) hosted the Menstruation Project Extravaganza (MPA). MPA used to be known as the Sustainable Menstruation Program, which was run by Sustainable Lawrence University Gardens (SLUG). Junior Lillian Sandberg, co-chair of CSSA, explained that the MPA represents a revitalization of the Lawrence University Community Council’s (LUCC) Student Welfare Committee (SWC) initiative. In recent years, SWC has collaborated with the Student Alliance Against Sexual Harassment and Assault (SAASHA) to provide menstruation products to the Lawrence community.

The MPA aims to create a sustainable system that will provide menstruation products to students in the long term. According to Sandberg, this initiative directly addresses the needs of students who menstruate by ensuring they have access to essential products when and where necessary. Sandberg stated that during the event, a team of nine volunteers worked alongside CSSA members to distribute baskets filled with menstruation products across campus. The initiative attracted attendees from various student groups and departments, fostering a sense of community involvement.

According to Sandberg, CSSA is currently collaborating with the university’s Facilities Operations and custodial staff to streamline the distribution process of these products. The MPA seeks to meet the needs of all students, regardless of gender or background. According to Sandberg, menstruation products will be distributed in all bathrooms, ensuring equitable access across campus. CSSA plans to implement this initiative in all campus bathrooms, making essential items more easily accessible for students.

“This project is essential in providing necessary products to all menstruating people on campus, easing some burden and stress on our peers,” said Sandberg.
