Every year throughout the month of April, Lawrence University observes the nationally recognized Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of this month is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and encourage individuals to advocate against it and educate others about the cause. Several student organizations, such as the Student Alliance Against Sexual Harassment and Assault (SAASHA) and the Sexual Harassment and Assault Resources and Education (SHARE) committee, hold events throughout the April to observe SAAM.
According to an email sent on behalf of the SHARE committee, this year there will be a series of events and programs designed to reach different parts of the Lawrence community. The email provides information on the primary objectives of SAAM and provides students with contact information if they wish to seek on-campus help. According to the email, reports can be made to the Director of Equity and Title IX Coordinator Robert Babcock online, in person in Memorial Hall Room 100, via email or by phone at 920-837-7492. Students can also speak to non-mandated reporters, such as the Campus Advocate Sara Van Cuyk and the Dean of Spiritual and Julie Esch Hurvis Dean of Spiritual and Religious Life and University Chaplain Terra Winston-Sage.
“We encourage you to join us in observing Sexual Assault Awareness Month by participating in events, initiating discussions and supporting organizations dedicated to ending sexual violence,” the email stated.
