This was a huge weekend for the LU men’s tennis team as they completed a sweep of conference rivals Ripon, Beloit and Carroll College Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lawrence improved their record to 8-8, 3-1 in conference.
In the singles competition against Ripon, sophomore Ryan Dunn, junior Daniel Hertel and junior Travis Fondow all recorded victories, defeating their opponents 6-2, 6-1; 1-6, 6-2, 7-6; and 6-4, 7-5 respectively. Hertel’s comeback was a great momentum builder for the team.
In the doubles competition, Dunn and Hertel defeated their opponents 8-4, and juniors Nick Dufficy and Kyle Nodarse defeated theirs 8-5. This was enough to ensure a Lawrence victory, edging out Ripon College 5-4.
The next day was a sunny one overlooking the Fox River, and LU trounced Beloit College, making their conference future look even brighter. They beat up on Beloit 8-1, with singles victories from Dunn, Hertel, Fondow, Nodarse and junior David Klaus who won by forfeit.
Lawrence swept Beloit in the doubles competition with victories from Dunn and Hertel, junior Lincoln Thomas and Fondow, and Dufficy and Nodarse. The Vikes were pleased with their performance and the momentum carried over to Sunday against Carroll College. Dunn, Dufficy, Hertel, Fondow and Thomas all won their singles matches.
The doubles players showed incredible poise. Dunn and Hertel capped off their weekend with three straight wins, beating their opponents 8-4. Dufficy and Nodarse also remained undefeated for the weekend, rolling to an 8-2 win.
The three conference wins this weekend sent Lawrence on a high that they hope they will not come down from as they are headed into the MWC championships at UW-Madison next week, April 25-27.
