The Lawrence University baseball team swept a pair of games from Lakeland College this past weekend. In the first game, the Vikings won 2-1 behind a solo home run hit by junior first baseman Ryan Zutter in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman pitcher Anthony Kouba pitched all seven innings and struck out six batters for his fourth victory of the year. Kouba is the leading pitcher on the Lawrence staff with a 4-1 record and a 2.48 ERA. In the second game, the Vikings pulled ahead in the fourth inning. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, led by senior catcher Jason Shanda’s two-out, two-run single. That put the Vikings ahead 4-1, which was the final score. Junior pitcher Justin Anthony picked up his first win of the year by striking out a career high of ten batters in seven innings of work. Lawrence is now 11-9 and 2-2 in conference for the season. The Vikings play a pair of double headers this weekend against St. Norbert. On Saturday, they will play two games at Lawrence, and on Sunday the Knights will host the Vikings.

Tennis team bests non-conference foes

The Lawrence men’s tennis team swept a pair of matches form non-conference foes this weekend. In the first match, the Vikings beat up on Marian College 6-1. The Vikings lost only the sixth singles match. In the second match, Lawrence defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Vikings had no problem winning 7-0. First singles player Jai Arora and second singles player Tom Lipari sat out the singles matches for the Vikings but did play together in the doubles matches. The Vikings will host a pair of Iowan teams this weekend. Today, Coe College plays the Vikings, and on Saturday the Vikings will host Grinnell.

Softball team wins two at MWC Classic

The Viking softball team had mixed results at last week’s Midwest Conference classic. On Friday, the Vikings gained a pair of wins. They defeated Grinnell 5-4 in nine innings. Sophomore second baseman Shannon Arendt hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to give the Vikings the lead. In the second game, the Vikings beat up on Illinois College. They defeated the Lady Blues 9-1. Freshman Lauren Kost pitched a three-hitter for the victory.

On Saturday, the Vikings did not have as good of a day. The Vikings lost three games. Lake Forest defeated Lawrence 3-0, Knox beat the Vikings 8-3, and Monmouth defeated Lawrence 5-2. The Vikings are now 11-10 on the season and are 4-3 on the Midwest Conference. The Vikings will play two games on Saturday. Their first game will be against UW-Oshkosh, and their second will be against M.S.O.E.

Women’s track finishes strong

The Lawrence University women’s track team had a good meet at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The women placed fifth out of sixteen teams in the meet. Junior Shelly Ebert, who won the 800-meter run, led the Vikings. The women also had two second place finishers. Freshman Kelly Scheer finished second in the 5000-meter run, and senior Sally Schonfeld finished second in the 1500-meter run.

The men did not fair as well. They only had one place winner. Senior Eric Davis placed fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The men finished last out of fourteen teams. The Vikings will compete at the Carthage College Invitational on Saturday.
