Mithai

Mithai is the Hindi word for sweet or dessert. There are many different kinds made in India, but my personal favorite is called Kaju Katli. In most households, a tray of Mithai is presented at a time of special celebration. In my dorm room, Mithai comes out everyday! It reminds me of my home, my family and all of the wonderful occasions we have celebrated together. It represents joy and positivity for me, which I aim to find everyday. When I eat a piece of Mithai, I look back on memories with loved ones fondly, instead of with sadness from homesickness. I look forward to all of the new memories I’ll be able to make the next time I eat Mithai with my family, instead of dwelling on the lack of my family around me. I’ll bite into a piece of Kaju Katli and if I close my eyes, I can transport myself back to my dining room table. Mama is directly to my left, Papa is at the head of the table, and Didi is sitting directly opposite Mama. I am seated in the perfect position to see each one of them smiling, laughing, and enjoying a fresh piece of Mithai. I see this image in my mind even when I am alone on my desk chair 8,384 miles away from home. In case you couldn’t tell by now, I love Mithai. It takes me back home. In 66 days I will physically be home, but the Mithai will take me home until then. What is the taste that takes you home?
