Mallory Meyer, a junior B.M.A. at Lawrence, has spent the past three seasons juggling life as both a student athlete and a Conservatory student. The forward on the varsity basketball team also plays the trombone and has learned a lot about the importance of balance.

From early on in her college search, Meyer knew Lawrence was the perfect fit.

“I was looking for somewhere I could play basketball and be in a good jazz program,” shares Meyer. “My mom’s principal actually went to Lawrence. I emailed the coach and checked out the music program. It was great, so here I am!”

Balance has been a challenge for the very involved junior, but Meyer has maintained a positive outlook.

“Thankfully,” says Meyer, “there aren’t any major time conflicts. A lot of times I’ll be going straight from practice to rehearsal, and I’ll find little times throughout the day to get homework done. They balance each other out while also dividing the stress between the two. My work in the Con helps me improve in athletics and vise versa.”

The member of the Academic All-Midwest Conference team has been named Athlete of the Week three times since her start at Lawrence. She has been a game-changer both on the court and on the stage and is also very involved in multiple groups on campus.

Meyer is a member of the Lawrence Christian Fellowship on campus. She has served as a referee in intermural basketball and has even tried her hand at intermural volleyball alongside her basketball teammates. On the Con side of campus, she is a part of the Jazz and Gender Equity Initiative (JGEI), which works to create a safe space for all people in the jazz department. She is involved with LU jazz ensemble and a jazz combo as well.

When asked about what advice she has for those wanting to play sports in college, Meyer shared, “Follow your dreams! If you have multiple interests, don’t feel like you have to choose just one. Don’t push anything to the side that you are super passionate about.”
