Lawrence University’s women’s basketball team edged Knox College 76-74 in what was a nail biting contest at the Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings dominated Knox by forcing 18 points in turnovers, but were parried back by their opponents’ 7 fast breaks throughout the game.
#22, Mallory Meyer, led the way with an impressive 24 points for her team and was aided by upperclassmen Maggie Culver and Sophie Morey, who put up a matching 13 points.
Olivia Kesti was vital for the Vikings’ transition, recording a game high 10 rebounds. Senior, Caroline Sharp, and Sophomore, Charlotte Brennan, were the key providers for Lawrence. The two of them set up 4 assists to help unlock the Knox defence.
It was 15-14 in Lawrence’s favour at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a 6 point show from Kesti who was able to net back to back free throws in the final minute of the quarter. The second quarter saw a similar shootout between the two teams, with the 14 points netted from each side seeing them go into the half 29-28.
The Vikings made a statement in the third quarter, winning out 25-22 and holding a 4 point lead. Maggie Culver and Caroline Sharp were essential in this period, responding to Knox’s growing attack with 2 layups and 2 jumpers that established their healthy advantage.
Going into the final quarter, Lawrence knew that they would have to match their attacking output to come away with the win and they didn’t disappoint. Star players, Mallory Meyer and Sophie Morey took the helm for Lawrence, continually breaking through Knox’s defence in an attacking duo that culminated in a quick flurry of free throws to win the game 76-74. With only 8 seconds left on the clock, this intervention proved to be defining for the contest.
The Vikings now have a record of 10-2 in Conference and will be looking to increase that win margin when they travel to face off against Illinois College on Saturday.
