Football falls to Illinois College

The Lawrence University football team dropped a road match to Illinois College last Saturday, losing to their conference rivals by a score of 45-21.
Both teams’ defenses outperformed the offenses in the first half, leading to a scoreless first quarter in which there were three interceptions and six punts. Lawrence accounted for two of those interceptions, with freshman Luke Galle and senior Jeff Nichols each getting a pick.
The second quarter was much like the first, though the teams swapped touchdowns to take a 7-7 score into the break. Lawrence’s touchdown was scored by freshman Luke Barthelmess on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Mazur.
Just like in the previous week’s game, though, the Vikings’ effort against the Blue Boys fell apart in the third quarter. The Blue Boys scored 31 unanswered points in the quarter to take an unassailable 38-7 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Lawrence put two more touchdowns on the board, but it would not be nearly enough to close the gap. Mazur boosted his stats with passing touchdowns freshman running back Sam Wagner and senior wideout Jeremiah Johnson, but the Blue Boys closed out the game and sent Lawrence back to Appleton with a 45-21 loss.
The Vikings will take on the Carroll University Pioneers in the Hall of Fame game this Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Banta Bowl.
