Bird of the week: Eastern Kingbird

About: Large flycatcher with white underside and very dark gray-black upperside with a white tip at the end of the tails.

Where to find this bird: Likes to feed over open water and grassy open spaces where they catch insects by sallying from an open perch. They frequently are found along the Fox River.

When to find this bird: early May – early September

Fun fact: Kingbirds have a large personality and regularly dive-bomb larger birds — everything from raptors to great blue herons — that make the mistake of passing too close.

They have a small crown of red, orange or yellow head feathers that it raises when harassing these larger birds, but generally cannot be seen.
