Hockey impresses in first conference play

The Lawrence hockey team started its conference season off well last weekend with a pair of wins at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. The Golden Eagles are the two-time defending MCHA Champions.
A 6-2 win on Friday evening coupled with a 3-1 win the following day have given LU the honor of being the only undefeated team in the MCHA. For the weekend, junior Mason Oakes led the team with three goals and junior Pete Mossberg accumulated five points as he Gretzky-ed in three assists on the first night.
Perhaps the most impressive play came from the LU goaltenders who split the series in net. Both came away with close to 40 saves, above .900 save percentages, only two goals allowed on 21 opposing power plays, and most importantly, two wins. The use of both goalies could represent a healthy level of good-natured competition in the net that was lacking last year. Daniel Ljung took home the MCHA Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance Saturday night. He blocked 40 of 41 shots, and the lone Golden Eagle goal was on the power play. The Viking defense held UM-Crookston to 1-8 on the power play Saturday.
The Vikings return home to the Appleton Family Ice Center this weekend for games at 7:30 on Friday and 2 on Saturday against new MCHA member Finlandia University.
