The Lawrence Lady Vikings basketball team has had a difficult season to say the least. They have been limited to only eight players on their roster and only four returning players from last season. Every Vike playing on the roster has been contributing this year, but the lack of depth has kept them from finding their first victory this season.
The Vikes went into their third conference game looking for a win against Carroll University, a team that was 6-2 overall in the season up to that point. The Vikes battled hard for the first half and kept the game close; they never fell more than ten points behind.
The Vikes continued to battle in the second half and kept the game close, even taking the lead late in the second half. However, the lead was short lived and Carroll went on a 7-0 run soon after. The Vikings were unable to close the gap and again fell behind in the last four minutes of the game. Carroll beat the Vikings 85-64.
The Vikings were led by senior Erin Henzi who had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Katie Condon added 12 points, junior Laura Aerts added 15 points and five rebounds and freshman America McClure had seven rebounds and six points.
The Vikings have played hard but have been hurt by turnovers, which have been the thorn in their side for the entire season. If the Vikings can protect the ball better and try to limit opponents’ opportunities, it will greatly assist this team that has scored points, but struggles to keep opponents from scoring. The Vikes are back in action this weekend at Monmouth College and Lake Forest College.
