The Lawrence University track team took part in the Midwest Conference Championships held at Ripon College over the past weekend. The men and women both placed eighth out of nine teams. Despite the rather disappointing team result, there were a few individual accomplishments. Sophomore Tatiana Bulat won the triple jump event with a jump of 34 feet and 11.75 inches. Bulat won the first individual women’s title since 2004. Junior Laurel Benson and senior Stephanie Kliethermes also placed in the triple jump, taking fifth and sixth respectively. Freshman Madeline Steininger also performed well, taking third place in the high jump and fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles.
The men had a few notables as sophomore Derek Micke finished fourth place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.18 seconds. Seniors David Quinlan and Phil Keith both took fourth place in their final collegiate meet. Quinlan placed in the 800-meter run while Keith placed in the 3000-meter steeplechase.Baseball
The LU baseball team had seven players named to the all-conference team this past week. Pitcher Kevin Kangas, outfielders Brad Hauser and Tim O’Toole and designated hitter Ben Webster all made the first team. Chris Clouthier, Tommy Schmidt, and Hawk Haiduke made the second team. Schmidt was also named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Week after hitting .750, with three doubles, two homers and nine runs batted in during a four-game stretch.
