Appleton Rugby – haw THIS IS NOT JOURNALISM -amb

Ben Dictus

Maybe you’re fast and maybe you’re slow. Maybe you’re short and maybe you’re tall. Whatever it is you may be, rugby might be your game. The game, for those of you that don’t know, is played worldwide and draws on skills from many different sports. You will have to run with and without the ball, jump, tackle, be tackled, kick (punt, dropkick, and grubber), catch, and pass. Rugby covers it all.
Now I admit the game can get rough, but unless you live in perpetual fear of concussions, flesh wounds, and broken limbs, it isn’t that bad. As my favorite rugby adage goes, “For those that would rather wound their bodies than their pride .,..” Just kidding *****–****** well, sort of. It isn’t as bad as it sounds. Remember: without pads you can’t hit that hard. You would break your own shoulder just as easily as someone’s leg. Rugby is a game of contact, not of impact like football is. Explosive hits aren’t a part of the game.
If your interest has spiked, or maybe you have been looking for a team to play with, come and join the Appleton Men’s Rugby Club. Sorry ladies, no Appleton team for you, but if you are interested I can set you up with Oshkosh or Green Bay (both 30 minutes away) or you can practice with the men. Practices are at Tellulah Park (over the College Avenue bridge, first left, several blocks in just past the train) from 5:30 till 7:30 pm. If you just want to come and check out a game that is fine too. We play in Oshkosh (take the Jackson street exit off 41, left out of the exit, left at the first lights and the park is on your right-hand side drive to back of park) on the 8th and 15th of October at 1:00 p.m. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact Ben Dictus at extension 7261.
