Administration Considers Environmental Theme – KH -lew

Katy Hillbo

The administration is currently proposing an environmental theme as the focus of the next two years at Lawrence.
In past years, themes have been oriented toward political involvement and life after college. The Senior Experience – though it will not be put into effect until 2012 – was planned in the ’06/’07 school year to help prepare students for life after Lawrence. The political activism theme of the ’07/’08 school year has generated the creation of the Beck Seminar course and myelectiondecision.org.
Some of the things that an environmental theme might include are: reducing Lawrence’s carbon footprint, renovating the Union to make it LEED Gold certified, having more environmental art and presenting honorary degrees to people who are making a positive impact on the environment. Professor Finkler of the Economics Department is also looking into working on a freshwater partnership between China and the U.S.
The administration is working with LUCC to see how much student interest there is in an environmental theme. LUCC will speak with the Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees on Wednesday April 30th to report on the response that they received from the student body.
If you have an opinion on the proposal, please speak with an LUCC member before April 30th.
