The Lawrence University men’s tennis team lost a closely contested match against St. Norbert College, but the team will still represent the North Division in the conference tournament this weekend.
St. Norbert went undefeated in conference play to place first in the North Division, and this was Lawrence’s only loss. Both teams will travel to Madison this weekend to take on the top two teams from the South Division, Monmouth and Grinnell.
As the No. 2 seed from the north, Lawrence will take on Grinnell, the No. 1 seed from the south, in the opening round. If the Vikings advance, they will play the winner of St. Norbert and Monmouth for the Midwest Conference team championship.
Lawrence finished the regular season with a record of 3-1 in the conference, and an overall record of 9-14. The Vikings easily moved their way through the North Division until playing St. Norbert this past weekend. Lawrence swept Beloit and Ripon 9-0, and the team beat Carroll 7-2.
Lawrence No. 1 singles player Ryan Dunn was once again the anchor for the Vikings, winning his singles match 6-0, 6-2, and he teamed up with Dan Hertel to with the No. 1 doubles match 8-6.
Hertel also won his singles match with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Travis Fondow came through with Lawrence’s final victory of the day at the No. 6 singles spot, winning in a hotly contested match, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 10-7.
Grinnell won the team championship last year, as well a nearly all the individual and doubles awards. The Vikings’ Ryan Dunn was the only exception, winning the conference tournament at the No. 1 spot. He looks to maintain his crown this weekend.
