The Lawrence University men’s tennis team split their matches Saturday, losing to UW-Whitewater, then beating conference rival Ripon College.
The difference between the two matches was day and night as the Vikings lost 8-1 to Whitewater, but bounced back to sweep Ripon 9-0 later that day.
Lawrence’s No. 1 singles player, Ryan Dunn, carded the Vikings’ only win against Whitewater when he defeated the Warhawks’ Alex Lowe 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 10-3. The Warhawks won all other matches in straight sets.
The Vikings recovered in time for their second match of the day against conference foe Ripon College. The victory marked the second year in a row that Lawrence has defeated Ripon, and the first time in 42 years that the Vikings swept the Red Hawks.
Lawrence is now 2-0 in conference play with the Midwest Conference Championships looming near. The Vikings play Illinois College followed by Carroll this Saturday, then play host to St. Norbert Sunday. The conference tournament will take place the following weekend in Madison.
