Class of 2027 elects LUCC representatives

The Lawrence University Class of 2027 has elected four first-year class representatives to the Lawrence University Community Council (LUCC). The new representatives are Brooklyn Schara, Jazlyn Hernandez, Angelina Larrea and Karl Li.

All of the new representatives were sent a brief questionnaire.

Schara

Q: Who are you and why did you run?

A: My name is Brooklyn Schara, but I go by Brook. I’m from Reedsburg, Wis. and I’m intending to major in Government or International Relations on a pre-law track. I enjoy the outdoors but not the bugs, and I think meeting new people who have different life experiences than you’ve had is the best way to grow. I’m also extremely passionate about social justice movements and Taylor Swift. I ran for a position as a Class Representative to hear more about others’ experiences and help voice their concerns in a consistent and clear manner, while explaining some more difficult decisions if the goal we’re reaching towards cannot be met.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish?

A: The Lawrence University Community Council already works extremely well, but I hope to continue to build off its stable foundation to increase the impact of a few aspects of our sustainability efforts and ensure that my classmates and I have all of the resources available to us to make sure we can be effective citizens. I also have several ideas to help increase political participation on and off campus that I’m excited to pitch to and work on through the Student Welfare Commitee, of course keeping class values present.

Hernandez

Q: Who are you and why did you run?

A: On the surface, I am Jazlyn Hernandez, an 18-year-old Hispanic woman from Dallas, Texas. Beneath my physical appearance, I am an open-minded and resilient individual, who looks forward to growing in all aspects of my being. I put myself in uncomfortable situations with the intention to overcome fears and challenges. Comfort does not always lead to growth which is why I am here and not at community college. Despite certain challenges I have come across, being dedicated and hard-working is what brought me here. If I stick to my “normal” and my “comfort,” I will never grow or gain new knowledge which is why I decided to give myself a new experience and opportunity for growth and development. Being a LUCC class rep will do just that. Not only is the position helping me grow as a person and as a student, but I now have more opportunities to be involved in my community and to help those around me.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish?

A: As an LUCC class rep, I intend to bring awareness to concerns, opinions, thoughts and suggestions from my peers and students regarding all of our academic experiences. I hope to be an effective participant and to represent my class and community with the highest respect.

Larrea

Q: Who are you and why did you run?

A: My name is Angelina Larrea, a first-year pursuing government on a pre-law track. Over the summer, I co-founded the @2027lawrence Instagram page and started to foster a connection with my future peers. I aspired to continue this collaboration into the school year and pursue my interest in student government, which student representative was a perfect mix of!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish?

A: Currently, my focus is on communication, participation and awareness of the many resources and organizations here at Lawrence! Between performances, clubs, volunteering, etc. we have a plentitude of opportunities available to students.
