The following paragraph was my contribution to a series in Lawrence Today which appeared in the fall term of 2003. The editor, Gordon Brown, decided against using my paragraph. I am providing this copy for anyone who is interested.Why I Teach:
After many decades of teaching, I still have the same strong motive I have always had: I like great works of literary art; I feel it important to communicate that liking to others; and as I look at our curriculum, I have increasingly the fear that if I don’t teach such things, they will be taught either badly or not at all.
