Lawrence Men’s Ultimate Places Fourth at Sectionals, Women Take Second -dlh

LU’s Ultimate Frisbee teams competed well this past weekend at UPA Sectionals in Milwaukee. Up against the elite schools east of the Mississippi, southwest of the Great Lakes, and north of the Wisconsin-Illinois border, two of the three teams qualified to throw down at Regionals in three weeks time.
Soft in the Middle, Lawrence’s men’s team, had a spicy first day of competition, going 3-1 and losing only to the defending national champion UW-Madison Hodags. The second day proved to be slightly more demanding of the team, ending in two hard-fought losses and a fourth place finish out of the 13-team field. Soft in the Middle’s ‘B’ team played passionately to a 12th place finish. When asked if he had any comments on the tournament to express in ******The Lawrentian******, Softy captain Brian Payne eloquently said “No.”
Lawrence’s women, playing under the pressures of a team apartheid due to name complications, had a strong showing en route to a second place finish; one spot higher than last year. Playing under the new name ‘Vici,’ the women were also only defeated by a returning national champion in the UW-Madison Belladonnas. Vici defeated every other school in the seven-team field.
Both teams will now be tuning up for Central Regionals to take place in Whitewater on May 8 and 9. When all shenanigans have boiled down at Regionals, at least one women’s and one men’s team will be sent to nationals. The going looks tough for Soft in the Middle and Vici, but both squads, not unlike Wu Tang, aim to “bring da ruckus.”
