Apollon: better than most Greek restaurants in Europe

Jeff Ostroski, Adam Kolb and Phil Keith

There’s a reason why Apollon claims its food to be “as the Gods intended.” Located at 207 N. Appleton St. across from the Appleton Public Library, this classy Greek restaurant is a great place for a date or a formal gathering of friends.
The building itself is rather small, and this combined with dim lighting helps to create a very intimate atmosphere. While this environment is great for dates, it can get a bit noisy sometimes if the restaurant is busy. Apollon also has live piano music, depending on the night.
The menu features a great selection of Greek cuisine, but is a bit on the pricy side for a college student – $12-$21 for an entre. There are only two vegetarian options: Greek salad and spanakopita, a traditional spinach pastry. Aside from that, the menu has a variety of dinners, which come with soup and salad.
They say that you can judge a restaurant by its bread, and this statement definitely holds true for Apollon. One of the most notable entres was the shrimp and lamb tenderloin combination ($17.95). If you’ve never had lamb, you definitely should try Apollon’s. They recommend ordering it medium to medium rare which makes the lamb very tender and flavorful. The filet mignon with mushroom cream sauce ($21.95) was also very good. The sauce was particularly well suited to the beef and gave it a more complex flavor.
As if the dinner menu wasn’t good enough, the wine menu definitely makes Apollon worth checking out – even Prof. Maravolo approves. Prices are very modest too, ranging from $15 to $50 a bottle. The Foris Pinot Noir ($30) went very well with our meals and had subtle flavors of cherry, rose petal, and spices.
We found Apollon to be a great restaurant, but a little pricy. It is an ideal place to go on a date, or for going out with the parents when they’re in town. You should plan on spending between $15 and $20 per person plus tip, and more if you order wine. The service is very courteous and knowledgeable and will make sure you and your party have an enjoyable evening.Apollon Restaurant
