Vikings looking for chance at MWC crown this weekend

The Lawrence University golf team is looking for that elusive team title at this weekend’s MWC Championships at the Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Illinois. The Vikings finished third in 2002 and second last year, and are also trying to keep their streak of individual MWC Champions alive after winning the past two individual titles. Jeff Henderson won in 2002 for LU, and Joe Loehnis finished in the top spot last season. If one were to handicap the race for the top this year, one of the favorites would have to be Vikings golfer Andy Link. Link has finished near the top against several very strong competitors, and is playing the best golf for LU so far this year. Loehnis and Henderson, as former champions, have to be threats as well, since they have a history of playing so well at this course.

The Vikings, of course, will be looking for the team title they have come so close to the last two years: the Vikings have not won the team title since 1949. If LU can take the individual crown, it will be the longest streak, at three, since Knox won four straight from 1982-1985. The tournament will be 36 holes, with 18 played Friday, and the last 18 played Saturday.
