COLORES to host drag show and pride prom

COLORES will host a drag show in the Esch Hurvis Room of the Warch Campus Center on Friday, April 29. Starting at 6 p.m., food will be available in the Diversity and Intercultural Center (D&IC), and the show will start at 8 p.m. Pride Prom will be hosted the following night, also in the Esch Hurvis Room, with food served in the D&IC at 6 p.m. and the event starting at 8 p.m.

According to senior Justin Sankey, the former treasurer of COLORES, who remains semi-active in the organization, the drag performers include Melee the Queen, Amethyst Von Trollenberg and Anya Knees Thunderkat. The hosts will be Glutonni Sinn and Easton Boyd. Although the event is mainly for queer students, allies are welcome, but hateful speech from any student will result in being removed from the event, said Sankey.

According to Sankey, the drag show began as an idea to uplift Black and brown queer people. Sankey added that COLORES booked drag performers with a variety of different body types.

“We also wanted this show to be very body-positive and have queens of all shapes and sizes,” said Sankey.  First-year Celia Carillo, PR Representative and Secretary for COLORES, is looking forward to being a part of Pride Prom. Carrillo expressed excitement about having a space for LGBTQ+ people to exist together in an affirming space.

“Lawrence is the first place I’ve ever been that I can fully express myself as a queer person,” said Carrillo. “We need a night to let loose, have fun, love one another and love being queer.”
