Season Heats Up for Fencing Team

Two weekends ago the fencing team traveled back to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals meet. This meet was an exciting meet for the team, since it contained Division I schools from all over the country.
Schools in attendance included Notre Dame, Detroit Mercy, Ohio State, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins, Penn State, Cleveland State, Temple and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
The Lawrence fencing team did very well, albeit not fielding an entire team, only bringing two full squads. The women’s foil team, fielding senior Melanie Kathan, sophomore Dorothea Schurr, and freshmen Sara Sheldon-Rosson and Catie Hoglund posted a 3-8 record, beating Detroit-Mercy, Wayne State and Cleveland State.
They also did very well individually, getting great individual victories. The women’s epee team, consisting of senior Chiara Terzuolo, Team Captain Elise Pfaltzgraff and freshman Kaitlin Bone, did very well, posting a 3-8 beating Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Unfortunately, they narrowly missed beating Wayne State in a 4-5 match. The epee team also did very well individually. The women did not field a sabre team at this meet.
The men’s team brought only five men to this meet but still did very well overall. The men’s foil team consisted of Team Captain Bryce Schuler and Junior Joe O’Halloran. They posted a 0-8 record, though individually beating many other fencers from the other schools.
The men’s epee team consisted of only sophomore Jordan Severson, who posted a 0-8 record as well, but did very well against the field, getting some good points on lots of schools.
The men’s sabre team consisted of junior Peter Kilkuskie and sophomore Alex Chee. They led the men’s team with a 4-4 record, beating Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, Wayne State, and Northwestern. They also had good individual victories over Ohio State, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins and North Carolina.
Despite the team being a little short-handed at this meet, the team did very well overall.
