November 15-19 will mark Lawrence’s Hunger Week this year. The annual event, sponsored by Mortar Board and the Volunteer Center, encourages others to donate time or money to end hunger locally and globally. This year, Hunger Week will combine the annual Hunger Banquet with a food drive for the first time.
The Hunger Banquet is a free event designed to illustrate the distribution of wealth and food worldwide to attendees. This year, the Hunger Banquet will be held on Nov. 18 in the Barber Room at Downer.
“The focus of the week really is the Hunger Banquet, in that we want students to participate in an event that will demonstrate firsthand the global demographics of hunger, and grasp that it is a real and serious problem,” said senior Megan Severson, one of the event’s coordinators.
Other events on campus to raise funds, food, and awareness include Salvation Army food pantry boxes in each residence hall and a sign-up at Downer for students willing to donate the dollar value of one meal-plan lunch to Oxfam’s hunger relief efforts.
Look for sign-up sheets in Downer for both the Hunger Banquet and the Oxfam meal drive starting this week.
