PITTSBURGH — City officials took extra security measures in preparation for the two-day G-20 Summit, a meeting of the leading rich and developing nations, that began Thursday. Large protests over different aspects of the global financial crisis took place Thursday and are expected Friday.

Some roads and schools are beginning to re-open, but as of Tuesday hundreds of residents were still in shelters and parts of the state were still under flood warnings. President Obama has promised the state a prompt response to the crisis and requests for federal aid.

NEW YORK — In an unprecedented move last weekend, President Obama asked New York governor David A. Paterson to drop out of the New York gubernatorial election in 2010. Despite Obama’s recommendation, Paterson, who took over after former governor Eliot Spitzer’s prostitution scandal, still plans to enter the upcoming race.
